Strong Foundations
Strong Foundations in the First Years of School
At Featherby, we place strong foundations at the heart of everything we do in Key Stage 1. We recognise that the first years of school are crucial in shaping children’s future success, and we are committed to ensuring that every child develops the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to thrive.
Strong foundations are built through a clear focus on securing early learning, particularly in communication, reading, writing and mathematics, alongside children’s social, emotional and physical development. We understand that children learn best when new knowledge is carefully introduced, revisited and embedded over time, enabling them to retain and apply what they have learned with increasing confidence.
What Strong Foundations Look Like
In our school, strong foundations are evident when children:
- Develop secure early reading skills through systematic phonics teaching
- Build confidence in speaking, listening and understanding language
- Gain fluency and understanding in early mathematics
- Strengthen attention, memory and self regulation
- Show independence, resilience and positive attitudes to learning
We ensure that learning is not rushed. Instead, children are given the time and opportunity to practise, consolidate and deepen their understanding so that knowledge becomes secure.
How We Secure Strong Foundations
Our approach is rooted in high quality teaching and a carefully sequenced curriculum. Learning is broken down into small, manageable steps and taught explicitly, with regular opportunities for practice and retrieval. Our Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) supports this.
Key elements of our approach include:
- Daily phonics and early reading teaching
- Clear modelling and guided practice
- Frequent opportunities to revisit and apply prior learning
- Ongoing assessment to identify and address gaps quickly
- A language rich environment that supports communication and understanding
We place particular importance on ensuring that children practise what they have been taught in a variety of contexts, helping them to make connections and strengthen their understanding.
Practice, Application and Continuous Provision
Strong foundations are reinforced through opportunities to apply learning beyond whole class teaching. In Year 1, DAP supports children to practise and embed key skills through purposeful, well planned experiences. Children are encouraged to apply reading, writing and mathematical skills through guided and independently, engage in meaningful talk, and revisit prior learning in different contexts. Adults guide this process by modelling language, extending thinking and ensuring learning remains focused and purposeful.
Supporting All Learners
We are committed to ensuring that every child secures strong foundations, regardless of their starting point. Teaching is adapted through targeted adult led focus groups, timely interventions and responsive teaching based on ongoing assessment. This ensures that all children, including those with SEND, EAL and those who are vulnerable, are fully supported to succeed and make strong progress.
Building Learning Behaviours for Success
Strong foundations go beyond academic learning. We actively develop the skills children need to become effective learners, including:
- Concentration and sustained attention
- Independence and decision making
- Perseverance and resilience
- Self regulation and emotional awareness
These behaviours are explicitly taught and nurtured, enabling children to engage successfully with learning as they progress through school.
Assessment and Responsive Practice
Assessment is an integral part of securing strong foundations and shaping our Developmentally Appropriate Practice. Through regular, ongoing assessment, we identify what children know, understand and can do, allowing us to respond quickly to gaps and next steps. This information informs our teaching, provision and interventions, ensuring that learning is carefully matched to children’s needs. By using assessment to guide planning and adapt provision, we ensure that all children continue to build secure foundations and are well prepared for future learning.
